Hybrid Simulation in Harness

HARNESS is an experimental, Java-centric metacomputing system based upon the principles of dynamically reconfigurable, object oriented, networked computing frameworks. The reconfiguration capabilities of HARNESS are not limited to the computers and networks enrolled in the virtual machine but also extend to the actual capabilities of the computational resources themselves. These reconfiguration capabilities together with the intrinsic modularity of HARNESS allow users to build hybrid simulations by gluing together simulation sub-components that adopt different programming models. In this paper we describe an example of such a hybrid simulation and we show how we glued two different programming models, namely message passing and distributed Object Oriented components. Finally we discuss the advantages of this approach.
